Liggett Crew 701
Liggett Crew 701 Summary
1st Lt Robert Liggett was one of Col Pierce's boys that had the advantage of Tactical Training in Orlando. During Col Snavely's command at Alamogordo a new crew was built around him using personnel from other crews. Four of them came from the dismantled Caputo CCT crew 1118. See Training link on the right. The Liggett Crew was assigned to the 857th BS, designated as Crew 701.
Liggett signed out for a B-24J, 44-40106. To our knowledge their ship wasn't given a nickname. In April 1944, they flew their assigned aircraft to North Pickenham, England, via the southern route. Lt Briggs, the Squadron Bombardier Officer flew with them, thus bumping PVT Kahn onto the Queen Elizabeth.
By our count Lt Liggett flew as the aircraft commander for Crew 701 for a total of 16 missions plus an aborted one. We can't be positive of all of the personnel changes on some of their missions. Lt Briggs was flying with the crew when they were interned. It's always possible that the regular bombardier could have missed some of the earlier pathfinder missions.
On 20 Jun 44, the Liggett Crew got shot up by German Me-410s and JU-88s while attempting a bombing raid on the refineries at Politz. They were able to get their crippled ship to Sweden. MACR 7073.
The Liggett Crew 701 was replaced by transferring over the Orthman Crew 806 from the 858th squadron.
